Safe Backing

Since one of every four truck collisions involve backing, it’s important to review proper backing procedures. The best solution is to avoid backing whenever possible and plan your route accordingly, but there are times when you’ll have to back into loading docks, across traffic, etc.

If you follow the five simple rules for safe backing you’ll greatly reduce your chances of being involved in a backing accident.

Rule One: Always get out and look before you back. Get out of your cab and walk around and behind your vehicle prior to backing. By doing this you’ll get a feel for what’s around you including possible hazards.

Rule Two: Always back from the drivers side. With a little planning beforehand, you can usually get in position to make your approach from the drivers side. Backing from your side allows you a much better and safer view of what you are backing into.

Rule Three: Check both sides as you back up. If you know you have clearance to the right and the top of your rig, you can spend more time looking on the left side of your vehicle. By checking your left and right mirrors frequently during backing, you’ll be able to see any people or obstructions easier.

Rule Four: Back slowly. This is a simple rule, the slower you’re backing, the better control you’ll have over your vehicle.

Rule Five: Use a reliable person as a guide whenever possible. This person should be in a position where they can see not only the area you’re backing into but also you,
the driver.
