Preventing Lane Change Accidents
Lane
change accidents are among the most common types of incidents that occur between
commercial vehicles and passenger cars. Often the lane change accident is
caused when the commercial vehicle attempts to move from a passing lane into
the right hand lane on divided highways.
The best way to prevent lane change accidents is to simply avoid excessive
lane changes. This may sound too simple, but because the commercial vehicle
must move back to the right after passing, the problem is with the view on
the right side of your rig. When moving to the left, a commercial vehicle
has a much better view of the traffic situation and therefore has less of
a chance being involved in an accident. When you attempt to move your rig
back to the right, the blind area is much larger.
Turn Signals Are Not Enough…
Turn signals alone are not enough to rely on when changing lanes. Before changing
lanes, the experienced driver makes sure that the maneuver can be accomplished
without interfering with the right-of-way of other vehicles on the highway.
This isn't’t always easy since many automobiles will try to pass you
on your right before you get a chance to complete your move into the right
lane.
Be Careful Near Entrance Ramps…
Many lane change accidents occur when a commercial vehicle moves to the left
lane to allow merging traffic to enter the highway from an entrance ramp.
After moving to the left, a blind spot is created on your right so you can
no longer see any vehicles that have merged. The safest course of action in
this situation is to slow down and stay in the right-hand lane allowing any
automobiles to merge in front of you.
