Rear End Collisions

Rear-end collisions lead the field not only in the number of accidents but also in the cost per accident. Rear-end accidents are expensive for several reasons including the type of injuries they cause (back and spinal) and also because there is virtually no defense for a driver who hits the driver in front of him. The traditional excuses such as “He slowed down too fast” don’t cut it – typically you’ll get a ticket for driving too fast for conditions or following too close.

National studies show that approximately 55% of all daytime collisions involving commercial vehicles are rear-end collisions. Statistics tell us that the major causes of rear-end collisions are:

  • Following too closely.
  • Excessive speed.
  • Not being alert to the other drivers actions.

As you know, with trucks the stopping distance is long. You also know that excess speed kills. In addition, it’s inevitable that drivers in front of you will do things that you do not expect. A key to avoiding rear-end collisions is to expect the unexpected and ask yourself, “Can I stop in time?”

The best way to avoid rear-end collisions is to drive professionally at all
times specifically:

  • Always maintain a safe following distance.
  • Maintain a safe speed for the conditions.
  • Always be alert to what’s going on around you.
