Trucking Insurance Industry Journal Roemer Report: Pilot Program May Bring Relief

Proposed legislation to allow rigs to carry up to 100,000 lbs. on federal interstates when diesel fuel reaches a certain price per gallon.

July 14, 2008, Toledo, OH…The July edition of trucking insurance industry journal, The Roemer Report, discusses what is being described as trucking’s biggest shakeout since 1980, when the industry was deregulated. The Roemer Report notes that small operators are the hardest hit. In the first quarter of 2008, 935 small motor carriers went out of business as compared to 385 the year before.

The Roemer Report is a monthly digest of news for the trucking industry read by fleet operators, owner-operators, and allied personnel. Often referred to as the “Kiplinger Letter of the Trucking Industry“, the report has been published by Roemer Insurance for more than 30 years. The publication is distributed free of charge in both print and electronic formats and is archived on the Roemer Insurance website and Insure My Rig (www.insuremyrig.com/roemerreport.htm), the small fleet division of
Roemer Insurance.

According to The Roemer Report, a pilot program proposed by senators from Maine, may help truckers cope with the escalating cost of diesel fuel. The two-year program would allow rigs to carry up to 100,000 pounds on the federal interstate system whenever diesel fuel reaches a certain price per gallon. The higher weight limit would allow trucks to carry more cargo and eliminate the need for drivers to move onto local roads that require more fuel and idling time. The Maine Department of Transportation conducted a study four years ago and found that higher weight limits would be safer and save money.

The July edition of The Roemer Report also notes that truckers in the U.S. are not alone in feeling the devastating effects of oil prices. Truckers in Spain, France, Portugal, India, Nepal, and Hong Kong have recently staged large and far-reaching strikes to protest spikes in diesel fuel prices that are over $10 per gallon in Europe. The frustration is keenly felt in the United States too. The American Trucking Associations sent a letter to President Bush requesting that he release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to provide relief from skyrocketing oil prices; some legislators have been requesting the same action.

The current edition of The Roemer Report also warns truckers of recent scams. Motor carriers in the United States and Canada have recently reported receiving letters that appear to be from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requesting bank account information. The DOT has not such letters. The Roemer Report advises anyone who faxed information to the fake number to contact their financial institutions and call the DOT’s hot line at (800) 424-9071.

Other topics addressed in this issue of The Roemer Report include health risks associated inadequate sleep and a discussion of recommendations made by the American Road and Transportation Builders, which include lobbying Congress to replenish the Highway Trust fund, developing truck-only lanes along the interstates, increasing the federal tax on fuel by at least 10 cents per gallon and implementing new tolls and taxes to help fund transportation improvements.
